Faculty Friday

What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has your journey been so far?

I have wanted to be a teacher from a very young age and it has been an amazing journey so far. I don’t recall what or who inspired me to be a teacher, but I had some amazing role models from my own education journey that shaped me into the person, and teacher, that I am today.

I originally went to college to be an early education teacher because I wanted to teach no higher than 2nd grade. However, I quickly learned that I was bored in my classes and needed a challenge. I changed my major to Mathematics Secondary Education. I love most moments interacting with teenagers and I hope that I am leaving a lasting impression on their journeys. I know that so many of them have left lasting impressions on me!

Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know?

I love math so much that for my birthday one year I traveled to New York City to see some of my college friends and forced them to go to the National Museum of Mathematics. I had just found out it existed and my friends were such good sports. I had an amazing time and I know they enjoyed themselves too!

Also during my time in South Carolina this summer I became obsessed with shaved ice. Both because it is delicious and because it was a nice cold treat in the hot summer weather in the south!

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching?

My favorite hobbies outside of teaching is crafting. I love to do crafts of all kinds, but my favorite crafts are using my vinyl cutting machine and crocheting. I am not amazing at either, but I find both really relaxing and stress reducing.

I also really love spending time with my nieces and nephews. I am excited for April and summer vacations to see all of them!

What’s one piece of advice you would give to your students?

Never be afraid to make mistakes, just make sure you are learning from them.

Mistakes Allow Thinking to Happen…MATH!
