Alumni All Star: Kate Loonie
Kate Loonie, a 2017 graduate of the Health Careers program, continued her education at UMass Amherst, earning a B.S. in Pre-Veterinary Sciences. She then attended Cornell University, where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Today, Kate is a Veterinarian at Rhinebeck Equine.
Favorite high school memory?
Some of my favorite memories come from being part of sports teams, especially basketball. I loved being on a team that showed real growth. We worked hard to win our league and compete against higher-level schools. That experience taught me discipline, teamwork, and how fun the process can be.
How did high school influence your career path?
Tri-County helped me explore careers in medicine and make an informed decision. The mix of academics and vocational training gave me a head start in medically related subjects and helped me adapt to busy, ever-changing schedules.
A project or activity that had a big impact?
I remember a clinical day at a long-term care facility when we filmed a lip-sync video with residents. Singing and dancing with them was so fun, and seeing their joy was unforgettable. It reminded me how small things can make a big difference and how meaningful simple connections can be.
How did vocational training help your career?
The skills I gained in Medical Careers were highly transferable. A strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology made learning animal anatomy easier. Patient communication skills I developed still help me in doctor-client interactions.
Advice for current students?
Take every opportunity—whether it’s a new class, travel, or joining a team or club. You might discover interests you never expected. It’s okay not to know exactly what you want to do after high school. If you work hard now, you’ll have more options and flexibility later.

Faculty Friday! Featuring Serena Benages, Special Education Teacher!
What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has your journey been so far?
I've known I wanted to be a teacher since I was about eight years old. I was paired with a younger student in a reading mentorship program in school and immediately recognized my love for teaching and special education (and how much I could learn from others who engage and interact with the world in different ways than I do). After college, I moved on to teach at a private school for children with autism. There I received my MsEd in Special Education. Shortly after leaving that school, I found the position I currently hold at Tri-County and knew it was a special place.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know?
Some students might know this about me already but I am a huge nerd, from playing dungeons and dragons to attending comic conventions and renaissance fairs. I love to dress up, meet comic creators and actors and pay homage to the characters and the fantasy worlds I love. I've made scale mail armor by hand for the renaissance fair and religiously rewatch my favorite Marvel shows. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Daredevil are some personal favorites.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching?
Outside of teaching, I like crafting, reading and lifting. I rowed competitively for many years, including college - while I don't get on the water as often as I'd like these days, I try to stay as active as possible and I truly enjoy pushing myself and setting new personal goals.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to your students?
Being a good person will always be more important than going along with the crowd. Having compassion or at least considering the experiences other people are going through is so valuable. You don't have to always agree with others, but you do have a responsibility to be respectful and thoughtful in your interactions with them. It's hard to learn if you only ever stay in your comfort zone, so try to experience the world as much as you can. I urge you to appreciate the beauty of the community around you and the perspective others can add to your own experience.

Alumni All Star – Brian Nolan – Computer Information Systems, Class of 2019
After completing several industry certifications, Brian is now a Desktop & Inventory Support Specialist with Citizens Financial Group.
Brian’s favorite memory from high school was attending the SkillsUSA Nationals in Kentucky. “It strengthened my public speaking skills and sparked my ambition to start my own business in the future,” he says.
Brian shares that high school influenced his career choices in unexpected ways. After graduating, he second-guessed his path and switched from IT to spending five years in manufacturing. Eventually, he returned to IT, realizing he was simply burnt out and needed to rediscover his passion.
Senior Project Week was an incredibly influential experience for Brian. Seeing the variety of projects his peers were working on helped him develop real troubleshooting skills and taught him the importance of setting realistic timelines for project completion.
The skills and knowledge Brian gained at Tri-County helped shape him into the person he is today—from his work ethic to his technical abilities. He believes that at Tri-County, “you only get out what you put in, and what you put in truly defines your growth. The effort matters, and that’s what makes the experience meaningful.”
Brian’s advice to current high school students:
“After four years in the same career, burnout can creep in—I’ve felt it myself. Whether you choose to push through or pause to reflect on your true passions, make sure you're being honest with yourself. Don’t procrastinate, but also don’t ignore what truly drives you. Take everything you can from your time at Tri-County—the lessons, the growth, the connections—because it is worth it. I promise.”

What inspired you to become a teacher, and how has your journey been so far?
I knew I wanted to be in a helping profession, but wasn’t sure which path to take. When I shadowed a speech-language pathologist in college, I saw how powerful communication is—and I was hooked. The field is so diverse, from the types of work to the settings, and I’ve loved every step of it. I especially love seeing students find their voices and grow in confidence. Now I feel grateful to have found a home at Tri-County.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your students might not know?
I love adventure! I’ve gone skydiving, zip-lining, snorkeling, and hiking in some amazing places.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of teaching?
I love spending time with my husband, our three kids, and our yellow lab, Warren. On weekends, you’ll usually find us at soccer or lacrosse fields, basketball courts, or cheer competitions. I also enjoy CrossFit, biking, cooking, and reading.

Success doesn’t come from one big step—it’s the small choices you make each day. Getting enough sleep, eating well, moving your body, asking questions, staying after school for help, reviewing your work, laughing, and spending time with people you love—those little decisions really do add up.

Crafted primarily from steel and accented with vibrant copper leaves, her sculpture captures both the elegance and edge of the mantis — all brought to life in record time and with incredible detail.
